antique enamel pendant

Hand fabricated in the ’30s or earlier, this 22k Chinese antique pendant is from this region, a piece once classic and now lesser seen.

The ‘yuan yang’ or mandarin ducks motif symbolises togetherness, an ideal blissful partnership.

The original pendant was carved gold work. We revived the pendant using plique-à-jour (French for “letting in daylight”) techniques, through long sessions of hand firing.

Our modern aesthetic involves a colour palette not commonly used in Chinese jewellery. The softer blend of blue green we hope will inject a ‘Bahamas’ holiday for these loving birds.

The pendant comes up to 2.5cm tall.

While old Chinese enamel is applied onto the grooves in the gold work, our efforts in laying a background on what was once negative space gives the pendant a unique East West dimension. This is one-of-a-kind 🙂

We would like to imagine our efforts as part of the tradition of Straits Chinese jewellery, a never-ending process of personalising jewellery by reworking. Adapting and reworking styles is a big part of the aesthetic in Peranakan jewellery.
