Antique 18k white gold jadeite jade bracelet set with 6 dark green cabochons in an ‘Omega’ watch strap design.
The jadeite has natural mottled patterns, a jade quality we regard as uniform with good brilliance. The darker hue of the jadeite is magnificent against the white gold setting.
This original white gold colour is especially precious because this is a watch strap design. Similar designs in modern bracelets look gaudy from the shine of gold, white or yellow. A watch is a watch (it can shine); a bracelet is a bracelet. This is well reflected in this bracelet.
It is interesting to note that ethnic Chinese white gold jewellery appears closer to a grey platinum color compared to the silver of modern white gold jewellery.
The six oval jade cabochons are inclined and arranged by size, against hand soldered flat chevron links that maintain the shape of the bracelet when worn.
A watch strap bracelet in antique fine jewellery is always coveted, not so much because they are rarer, but really because the craftsmanship involved is telling. In older pieces such as this, the strap (chevron links) thins moving away from the centerpiece – this is wonderful.
The jadeite cabs are housed in a tight filigree setting, which bears a certain depth, possibly to allow as much light into the back when worn on the hand, as well as to give an impression of a thickset, rich centerpiece. There are tiny carvings that resemble shiny diamonds on the filigree – the white gold sparkles in restraint.
Style over femininity, this is the type of bracelet that wears like a bangle (its form is fixed). Old-school glamour is effortless in its (by now) chinoiserie chic.
