Chinese Filigree Ivory Bracelet, Scrimshaw
Description
’30s hand-fabricated Chinese filigree ivory bracelet with scrimshaw artwork. The carvings and paintings are of distinct flowers on four panels, with two slightly faded, one more than the other, and the other two darkly inked. The bracelet is marked Sterling and looks to be signed by the maker. The filigree is consistent, close-knitted, and unusually thick but fine. The clasps are simple and finely attuned to the folding panels, which some similar pieces lack. The craftsmanship in this Chinese ivory bracelet is robust jewelry art, with not many coming close and kept in this condition. Flower illustrations, whether on ivory or bone jewelry, is harder to come by compared to birds or figurines. It is possible the flower art follows each season.
