Antique Hoop Earrings, Enamel Filigree

A curious pair of 14k hoop earrings from the earlier part of the 20th century.

The hoops show meticulous Victorian filigree gold work, but the relief work on the outer rim also looks similar to much of Chinese old jewellery.

The surprising enamels colours are glass, distinct from enamel paint, and this stained glass effect goes front and back. You can see this effect when there is light behind. The last photo reminds me of ‘puddles’ of light falling onto city streets.

This bohemian pair will look lovely on someone who enjoys a little curiosity, not necessarily hoops. The hoops fall just under 3cm and are considered medium size hoop earrings. I don’t feel they are flirty, because it is all of cineaste, its intricacy hidden but presence golden.

I have never come across a pair as such, somewhat crossing the lines between Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts period jewellery, and between Victorian and Asian gold jewellery.
