Club Ring, Old Mine Cut Diamond Ring, Antique Peranakan Jewellery

This Peranakan old mine cut diamond ring would be considered a ‘fun’ ring during its time. The club is a persistent symbol of luck, and we imagine a spin-off from the pastime of gambling or roulette games. With as many fetishes as festivities, the Peranakans had many ‘charm’ symbols made into rings, pendants, tiepins and brooch pins. Both men and women had ‘charms’ that functioned indelibly as talismans, from widespread symbols to elaborate exclusive symbols customized for its owner. While there are many common pieces going around from seller to collector and vice versa, we have yet to get hold of exclusive talismans, as many are kept within families who have little idea of these well-intentioned curios.

An interesting history of this diamond club ring is its longer than usual history (of the Peranakan pieces we have curated), possibly dating to the Victorian era. The four mine cut diamonds are about .48ct in total weight. Since such pieces were designed to shine under candle light, we do not expect it to command the brilliance of modern cut diamonds. Whatever, we love a sexy gamble.
