SIJS Cushion Cut Diamond Ring

Platinum and 18k custom diamond ring set with a 2.08ct VS1/G diamond and accented by antique hand cut diamonds.
The cushion cut diamond is a very fine candidate for an antique setting. Beyond its big table, the prominent size and height mean raising it high would be elegant, and nothing short of it!
In the act of elevating the diamond, we chose a square bezel for two reasons. One to enhance the size of the diamond and then to house it within a ‘viewing gallery’. A round bezel loses the angularity the four corners of the cushion cut.
When a diamond is set high, proportions become even more important or else the ring feels as if it is ‘sticking out’ when worn on the finger. Many times rings look good raised (on its own) but oddly protrusive when worn (on the finger). This tactile difference indicates the form and function of the ring has been compromised.
Our solitaire feels solid when worn on the finger, not frail. At 8mm above the finger, the diamond is held high but soothed by the shield or ribbon motif bridge on each side. This is not just for design effect but to consider that the wearer has a petite ring size (ie. big rock, slim finger). The bridge distributes the weight of the diamond and gallery more evenly, hence there is less chance of the ring turning sideways.
The shield-ribbon bridge continues and extends into a small bow at the back of the ring band. The ‘completion’ idea is to inject harmony to conscientious design. The bow actually sits the ring level.
The elements of gold ‘brackets’ break the grey in the platinum and present an otherness without introducing too much extra design elements. We constructed the gold over the platinum, ensuring the ring band flows as one piece and not soldered from parts.
We adhered to the custom request the ring be nowhere shiny. This exacts an expert forging and filing in the platinum work, as this ring has absolutely no plating over it. Modern solitaire rings are finished to a bling but this ring is finished by filing and no more.
We reversed the usual two tone effect, more platinum and less gold. This unique small touch is again to refrain from adding another design element (thus taking away the diamond’s singularity and natural elegance). The hand cut diamonds fall gently to the platinum which we made sure not to appear as ‘dots’. They should be there, but not there…
The outcome is a charismatic solitaire ring, with nuances of antiquity and possibly, an Edwardian setting. There is no suggestion of frivolity yet all of presence.
When the rock is perfect and its size becoming, let’s not clutter.
