22k gold ring set with fine lapis lazuli and enamel.
Continuing our journey in making the old out of the new, this ring is made around the shape and cut of its stone.
The gold work is an angular hollow section rounded on the exterior and contoured on the perimeter, like many Roman cabochon rings.
The lapis is cut from a small material with well spotted pyrite. Of course we cut the stone to trail the pyrite.
The stone is not big, 14.4mm by 7.6mm, but the sugarloaf cut, over an ordinary cabochon, increases its journey.
The mountainous region of the stone is deep blue, one end the cobalt brightens. The flat plain of the stone, visible at the back of the ring, is quite breathtaking.
Like the earth seen from space. The lee side of the mountain could be our inner recesses, privy only to the one who sees the whole.
The ring shoulder is scratchy, and only for a small section, to roughen like bark, to set the lapis amidst nature and gold.
The river of cobalt glass enamel finishes what the eye needs to see, sort of handholding the lapis. Without this river, the mountain may bore.
The whole ring is blue and gold, blue and gold. The blue, and the gold, of stone.
