Description
22k Roman Ruby Ring
Fine natural ruby ring set in 22k.
The 6.05ct unheated Mozambique ruby is blood red with no modifying color.
The granulation as border is a Greek hellenistic style, incorporated into a shield it becomes a tidier ‘Roman’.
The design is composed of distinguishing the mount and the band in a clean way.
The face has granulation work, the band has milled perforation.
The bezel is built at a curve, with a feeling for contour, but the band is somewhat linear.
These are considerations to build a more artistic form, over mere medieval revival.
The gold has been pulled down to create a helmet under the mount, this is a sculptural touch that makes this ring lofty.
Many ancient rings are flattish on the finger, for they are less sculpted.
The ruby is silky but fiery, the stone is a nice kind of oval that when drawn out fulfils a proportional shield.
Designing a flushed ring with no accent stones and only bezel requires blending the historical form with an expressive eye.
The face of the ring spans 20mm by 16mm.
